今はシルバーの部品、特にハブクイック芯。もっと集めておけば良かった。

the grey and orange (js shop colours)

waxed cloth was where it began.

in addition, i wanted to include high quality sailing rope.

this, to honour some of our close friends that

have been involved with jitensha studio over the years.

i love the look of the rope and

the functionality of it made sense.

to soar on a bicycle or on a sail boat.

製作作業ー

グレーとオレンジのワックスクロスはショップカラーということで、

最初から決まっていたけど、

どうにかjitensha studioの良き仲間を

尊重したい気持ちも込めて、

ヨットのロープを使う事に決定。

見た目も好きだけど、

丈夫でスポーティ。

材料の準備を終えて、

作る作業のはじまり。

so who is this lei liu?

i decided to ask her some questions and requested she respond in handwriting

as this was one of the things that made a lasting impression on me when we met years ago.

デザイナーのlei liu氏とのインタービュー。

con lei -pt.1

what began in our formative years,

waxing and waning,

found a ripe moment.

a year ago,

the project of the jitensha studio and lei liu

collaboration finally came to be.

an accessory designer/maker based in nyc

and jitensha studio in berkeley

celebrating 30 years-

it seemed like a good time to introduce something new

and honour our commitment to our relationships old and new.

大学時代の親友のll氏。

やっと物を一緒に作る時がきたのが

一年前の事だった。

彼女はニューヨークに住む、

アクセサリーデザイナー。

first order of business.

must order clutch from lei.

a version of something she had

but with leather i chose at

a local leather treasure cove.

まずは彼女に自分のバッグの

オーダーを入れた。

彼女の持っているのと

似ているけれど、

自分が選んだ革を使用。

paper bag clutching.

紙袋にも見える所が気に入った。

so this is where our creative journey together began.

もちろん、jitensha studio の物とは

違うけど、

ここで調整期間ができて、

二人の製作作業が始まった。

behind the screen

姿勢が悪い自分に反省。

作業シャツは父が高校時代着ていたJUNのもの。

久々に学生気分、

せめて形からでも入りたい私で、

朝、そう思ってとっておきの作業シャツを着た。

そうもいかず、

モタモタしていた。

昔、サッカーのコーチをしていた時に、

ぽっちゃりしたメキシコ人の双子がいた。

その二人は必ずと言っていいほど、

走っている時に、

上半身は一生懸命走っている様子を表現して、

下半身は歩いているのと同様の動き。

上だけ見ると歯を食いしばって、

汗かいて、息を切らしていた。

あのギャップを思わせる自分の姿が

作業場にあった。

新しいものに触れるのは気持ち良い。

これは結構嵌りそう。

trying my hand at screen printing,

with a lot of guidance from my friends.

i’ve always been a paper/graphic fiend.

so it was rather exciting to be in this setting.

oh the possibilities.

no pressure.

having people around who are printmakers was inspiring

and frightening at the same time.

i kept thinking about all the ways in which i was doing it incorrectly.

or how i was not worthy if i wasnt dedicating my life to it.

but then again,

in the spirit of the design…

a little levity.

家中にサコッシュ。

it filled my life.

for a night.

次はどんなのを作ろうか。

looking forward to the next adventure soon.

朝のエビスライドが企画され、

集合場所は彼のロフト。

コーヒーと自家製ベーコン、ねぎ入りスコーンで

迎える彼。

さあ、これから走るべし。

さて、出発。

エビスを通じて初めて会う人。

久々に自転車に乗るvr氏。

彼女の性格はこの青空のよう。

お店で集合。

 

some of the old friend brought items

they had purchased early on.

a bit of history.

昔からのお客さんは

うちのお店であの時代に買った品をいくつか

持ってきて披露。

old friends who worked at js came to celebrate as well.

we met y.o. as a student at cal when he was still in his teens.

his older brother t.o. was on the cal cycling team and

they rode around in a vw bus.

these were the years when bomber jackets and ray bans

were in full rotation (no irony).

when we met y.o. he spoke mostly english,

which otosan would promptly reply in japanese.

(i could write endlessly about our employees over the years but

i will save it for another post.)

昔お店で働いた人もみえて、

感謝でいっぱい。

当時大学生であった彼。

今や、自分の家族と一緒に。

元従業員の話になると長いので、

それはまたの機会と言う事で。

old and new friends.

the next generation.

under the warm regard of the elders.

ハワイの話で盛り上がる。

言った事ないな。

次の世代。

どうにか犬かき状態。

with gratitude.

感謝。

this is where the real excitement is.

なぜかピンクレディーを思い出しちゃう。

そんなミーハーなお話と違い、

one of  my favourite words in french.

when i lived in paris,

my hostess would ask me what i would be doing that day.

i guess as a student- in that place,

this word described the majority of my free time.

i loved the way it was just vague enough

with a hint of importance.

now back in the bay area,

i dont have many chances to use this word.

wander and explore i do,

but its not quite flâner.

 still, i like to face the streets

with some sort of paper and pen.

the inujirushi mini makes me think of this type of daily activity.

フランス、特にパリに居たときは

この言葉をやたら使うチャンスが多かった。

美に満ちたあの街では、

ちょっとぶらりとするのが

宝のように貴重だった。

今はバークレーで

周りから吸収するものは違う。

持ち物チェック〜

ティッシュ、ハンカチ、手帳。

こんな気持ちを大事にして。

taipei international cycle show 2012

今年も行って参りました。

面白い物がいくつかありました。

中でもcane creekのヘッドが一番でしたね。

あの見た目は絶品。
