gen木工房、小山氏製作.
自転車スタジオの要望で作って頂いたもの。
必要を感じていて製作したもので、とても使い勝手が良い。
下の空間には本来、組み立て中の自転車用部品を置くスペースだが
現在は未使用部品置き場になってしまっている。
受注生産、￥15万より。
細部変更可。
仕上げ、キャスター変更可。

the process-
the grey and orange (js shop colours)
waxed cloth was where it began.
in addition, i wanted to include high quality sailing rope.
this, to honour some of our close friends that
have been involved with jitensha studio over the years.
i love the look of the rope and
the functionality of it made sense.
to soar on a bicycle or on a sail boat.
製作作業ー
グレーとオレンジのワックスクロスはショップカラーということで、
最初から決まっていたけど、
どうにかjitensha studioの良き仲間を
尊重したい気持ちも込めて、
ヨットのロープを使う事に決定。
見た目も好きだけど、
丈夫でスポーティ。

材料集めは決めることが多い。

the construction begins.
材料の準備を終えて、
作る作業のはじまり。

そう思って、デザインしたサコッシュ。

i decided to ask her some questions and requested she respond in handwriting
as this was one of the things that made a lasting impression on me when we met years ago.

what began in our formative years,
waxing and waning,
found a ripe moment.
a year ago,
the project of the jitensha studio and lei liu
collaboration finally came to be.
an accessory designer/maker based in nyc
and jitensha studio in berkeley
celebrating 30 years-
it seemed like a good time to introduce something new
and honour our commitment to our relationships old and new.
大学時代の親友のll氏。
やっと物を一緒に作る時がきたのが
一年前の事だった。
彼女はニューヨークに住む、
アクセサリーデザイナー。
first order of business.
must order clutch from lei.
a version of something she had
but with leather i chose at
a local leather treasure cove.
まずは彼女に自分のバッグの
オーダーを入れた。
彼女の持っているのと
似ているけれど、
自分が選んだ革を使用。
paper bag clutching.
紙袋にも見える所が気に入った。
so this is where our creative journey together began.
もちろん、jitensha studio の物とは
違うけど、
ここで調整期間ができて、
二人の製作作業が始まった。

三十周年を祝い、
お客さんから新しい写真をいただき、
編集作業でなんとこんなに遅れて、
新たに祝う気持ちで、
再度味わう。

集合場所は彼のロフト。
コーヒーと自家製ベーコン、ねぎ入りスコーンで
迎える彼。
さあ、これから走るべし。

her presence matches this sky.
さて、出発。
エビスを通じて初めて会う人。
久々に自転車に乗るvr氏。
彼女の性格はこの青空のよう。

お店で集合。
some of the old friend brought items
they had purchased early on.
a bit of history.
昔からのお客さんは
うちのお店であの時代に買った品をいくつか
持ってきて披露。
old friends who worked at js came to celebrate as well.
we met y.o. as a student at cal when he was still in his teens.
his older brother t.o. was on the cal cycling team and
they rode around in a vw bus.
these were the years when bomber jackets and ray bans
were in full rotation (no irony).
when we met y.o. he spoke mostly english,
which otosan would promptly reply in japanese.
(i could write endlessly about our employees over the years but
i will save it for another post.)
昔お店で働いた人もみえて、
感謝でいっぱい。
当時大学生であった彼。
今や、自分の家族と一緒に。
元従業員の話になると長いので、
それはまたの機会と言う事で。
old and new friends.
the island connect on right. (talk story?)
the next generation.
under the warm regard of the elders.
ハワイの話で盛り上がる。
言った事ないな。
次の世代。
どうにか犬かき状態。
with gratitude.
感謝。
this is where the real excitement is.
初心にもどって。

custom order for client in tokyo.
達人の小山氏と豊福師匠の共同製作。
東京のお客様のオーダーの家具。
その中から一つ。
製作から、納品まで。
作業場の映像。
木の上に錫を貼る作業。
どうしても気になる、
下の台。
carefully putting tin on top of the wood base.
meticulous work.
ガラスのトップをつけて、完成した姿。
鋭さの中にある、暖かみのある作品。
都会生活では欠かせない。

sexy and sleek – body temperature.
some sophisticated warmth in the urban jungle.
考える人。

どのように構える。
自分の貴重な時間。
この空間は限りなく自由に感じる時と、
重く、追いつめられるような時と、
色々ある。
この中で、こんな発想も。
城井氏から溢れでたものの一つ。
ゆるみ具合が絶妙。

i recently saw on japanese pbs
that the ideal position to get things going was to assume
the position of “the thinker”.
not sure if this is true but i am happy to
report that there is wonderful activity
in that special room.

もう四十年以上前になる。
新宿の伊勢丹で父が親にお金を借りて、
買った大事な道具。
これで所帯道具を作ったり、
のち私のベッドフレーム、本棚、机、
椅子、ぶらんこなども作られる。
お店の内装もこの道具にお世話になる。
私も何度か使っていて、
最近久しぶりに棚の調整で使ったところ、
なんだか、がんばっているモーターの匂いが。
大事に使っていたからこそ、
今でも貴重。
物を大事に使いましょう。

over forty years ago,
this set of power tools were purchased by my father
at shinjuku’s isetan.
at the time, it was not an inexpensive purchase and
he had his parents help to acquire them.
he made furniture for the then newly weds’ home.
it was also the beginning of what seemed to me a part of
some magical trinity.
as a young child,
there was nothing that my father could not make.
almost everything in my room was made by him.
the shelf, the desk, a chair, the bed frame,
and my red swing.
the interior of the shop too
was in large part constructed with these tools.
my father gave me my own power drill several years back.
its reliable and even has the now norm option of going cordless.
though i care for it,
its not quite like this old friend.
i recently had the opportunity of checking in with this drill.
i met it with the same gusto that it had responded with in the past
but i smelled a faint indication of hard focused work over the years from its motor.
i am happy to report that its still going-
just at a different speed.

マエストロ指田。
この間、アメリカ人の友達に、
一昔前に聞いたことのある、
ソース顔と醤油顔のことを聞かれた。
英語で説明するのはとても難しい。
しかも、人種をこえて存在するのだろうか。
マエストロ指田は間違いなく
西洋の香りを漂わせている。
今でも、アランドロン、ダックスフンド、
厚切りの蜂蜜トースト、
手作りベーコンと言うと、この人を思い浮かべる。
でもやっぱり東京の香りはぬけない。
生活でしょうか、姿勢でしょうか。
江戸の精神なのでしょうか。
「江戸はここにある」を求めて。

最近、ikí-edokko swag プロジェクトの勉強に当たって、
やたら、江戸や職人について本を読んでいる。
欧米の人に「粋」は何って聞かれても、
なかなか自分でもなんとなくしか
理解できたないものを英語でうまく伝えるのに一苦労。
これについてはまた詳しく書くが、
自分の解釈では一部として、
肩に力が入っていない、楽な鋭い感覚、感性。
豊福師匠含めて、マエストロ指田とフォルムの達人小山氏に
粋なあり方を伺える。
