thank you to our friend l.c. for providing additional photos.
we have a fuller sense of the festive day that passed this spring.
thank you to all who made it out and for those of you
who were elsewhere, we missed you deeply.
thank you for all of you who made it possible to celebrate such a day.
heading over to the other side of the bay.
bart in the morning.
lovely friend of the shop e.s. welcomed the ebisu friends
with coffee and scallion bacon scones.
now off for a ride.
heading to downtown oakland.
getting to know one another.
happy to see v.r. on her light blue ebisu
her presence matches this sky.
gather at the shop.
some of the old friend brought items
they had purchased early on.
a bit of history.
old friends who worked at js came to celebrate as well.
we met y.o. as a student at cal when he was still in his teens.
his older brother t.o. was on the cal cycling team and
they rode around in a vw bus.
these were the years when bomber jackets and ray bans
were in full rotation (no irony).
when we met y.o. he spoke mostly english,
which otosan would promptly reply in japanese.
(i could write endlessly about our employees over the years but
i will save it for another post.)
old and new friends.
the island connect on right. (talk story?)
the next generation.
under the warm regard of the elders.
this is where the real excitement is.

choosing colours can always be challenging.
somehow it marks us.
as many colours that exist,
there are many ways to get there.
there is always an element of surprise
but when things translate smoothly, its always gratifying.
this particular customer was inspired by a car colour.
the icy light blue suits a berkeley summer day.

28 years ago we used to go around on our bicycles,
him and his younger siblings/cousins
and me, my younger brother and friend from the building.
we had a healthy rivalry and marked our territories;
him and his crew around the corner
and me and mine on our street (especially around our building).
the fruit trees, the two big plum trees on our street
and the fig tree facing our lot was at times
the center of our young turf wars.
since we were always outnumbered-
our three versus,
at least their five,
we were alert, ready and superficially brave.
after school i would do laps around the building or the block
with my pal who lived downstairs
and my younger brother (in that order)
with a self righteous fervor.
if we let our presences be known
we could avoid an ambush.
sometimes an extra jeer or soggy plum in the face
resulted in head-to-head heated confrontation.
many years later, this fellow from around the corner
was a dedicated employee here at jitensha studio.
and now he is an owner of an ebisu.
with appreciation for the friendship and
support from this former neighbour over the years.
